Go with your gut instinct

When it comes to making decision in work and personal life , humans use a combination of emotional and logical impulses known as  your gut instinct or your intuition.  Oprah may not have had a vision initially when deciding on her career. She went with her gut.   When Oprah was deciding on her career she was torn between 2 worlds. What the world was saying to her and what she felt the truth was for her. It felt like an unnatural act for her to stay in reporting. Although she knew she was already positioned  in a great job she wasn’t connected with it in an emotional way.

She started to think “What do I really want to do”.  She knew she didn’t want to stay in reporting.  “Knowing what you don’t want to do is the best possible place to be in because it only leaves you to figure out what it is you really want to doing”.   Oprah got demoted from her position. The producers wanted to fire her but they didn’t want to give her a final payout as her contract was still running so they put her in a talk show instead.  The moment she sat down and talked to an ice cream man and his multiple choice of ice creams, was the moment she knew she found her purpose. She found her calling. She found something she could relate to and that gave her purpose.

When she got the call to go the Chicago she knew it was the right thing for her to do, even if she didn’t succeed. Every person told her (except her best friend) that she was going to fail. Her bosses told her she was going to fail, and that she would be swallowed up because some other hot shot was there and basically she wouldn’t survive. They threw everything at her to convince her to stay including a car and apartment to which she declined. Why?

She went with her gut. It felt right for her, even if she was going to fail.   What does this have to do with our choice of career or passion. The truth is from the very beginning, is to listen to your instinct. All the best decisions in life come from your gut instinct and you will know that it’s the right move. Her definition of luck is preparation and meeting the moment of opportunity. And she knew she could do it. She had a bigger vision and went with her gut instinct.
