We make sounder decisions, build stronger relationships, communicate and network more effectively. We’re less likely to tell white lies or cheat as we become more authentic in our own skin. We are more effective at work, get results easier and we get promoted faster. The best of leaders develop this skill early.

What is Self Awareness?

Being self aware means understanding your weaknesses, beliefs, strengths and desires in life. It’s a skill that can be easily be developed over time.  First we need to understand two types of self-awareness.

Internal self awareness, represents how clearly we see our own values, passions, aspirations, fit with our environment, reactions (including thoughts, feelings, behaviors, strengths, and weaknesses), and impact on others.

External self awareness, means understanding how other people view us, in terms of those same factors listed above. People who know how others see them are more skilled at showing empathy and understanding others people’s views.

To become a top performer in both work and home one must actively work on both seeing themselves clearly and getting feedback to understand how others see them.
